Advanced Comedy Writing
5-WEEK COURSE CURRICULUM*
* For any of you San Diego State graduates, this means “what you’ll learn”.
So, you’ve already learned the basics of how to write a sketch. What’s next? Hopefully not being a writer for a Blue Man Group spinoff on a Carnival Cruise line. Now it’s time to up your game so that your work is strong enough to land you a real TV comedy writing gig (or at least writing for an 11-year old Instagram Influencer with her own Youtube channel).
In this course for ADVANCED COMEDY WRITERS only, an Emmy Award-winning Saturday Night Live veteran will take your strengths as a sketch writer and help develop them to your fullest potential. By focusing on specific sketch templates, you will experience the rewriting process used on TV shows that leads to maximum laughs.
There will be readings and screenings of famous (and not-so-famous) sketches to exemplify the craft. As a bonus, a significant part of this course will be giving you the opportunity to work on your individual sketches and get detailed professional feedback, always with the intention of making your sketches stand out from the rest of the submission packets.
Whether your goal is to write for Kimmel, Colbert, HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, Saturday Night Live, or simply to stick it to your law school classmates who said you weren’t funny, this course is the only live interactive advanced class taught by the guy who wrote the sketch for Will Ferrell and Norm MacDonald that pissed off an entire room full of superstars at the ESPY Awards.
COURSE FORMAT
This course comprises 5 weekly virtual class sessions (held live on Wednesdays, via Zoom), with assignments to complete on your own between each class.
The course is limited to 12 students so that I can provide the level of feedback you and your writing deserve.
